Q: Airport express and HP printers

Can anyone help? I am trying to print e-mails etc from my i-Pad 2 to my printer. I have an HP Laserjet P1102w wireless printer that is connected via USB to my airport express but the express does not recognise that the printer is connected. I have tried different cables with the same result. I have printed wirelessly from my Windows computer so I know that the printer works fine. I have played music via airplay through the airport express and I can also see the airport express when I open up Airport Utility. I am convinced that all items are working correctly but I still can't get the airport express to recognise the printer. Does anyone have any suggestions? There does not seem to be any options in Airport Utility to add a printer. Thanks.

The HP Laserjet P1102w is a wireless printer, which means it does not need its USB cable connected to your Express.

If you want to use it wirelessly, leave it disconnected.

Hi John, this still does not work. The airport express does not recognise my printer. I am stuck for ideas on how to fix this.

Your iPad can print to any AirPrint printer on the same wireless network, so be sure the HP printer is a client on the same wireless network as the iPad.

AirPort Utility is not required, and the printer will not appear in it.

Do not connect the printer's USB cable to anything; it's not necessary and will only complicate matters.

If the printer does not appear in an iPad app using the "share" Share icon.png icon and selecting "Print", then restart your router. I presume that is your Express? If so, unplug it from the wall socket it and let it rest a moment. Power down your printer as well, and while you're at it, restart your iPad by pressing its Sleep / Wake and Home buttons simultaneously until the "Slide to power off" appears, and power it off.

Then, power up the Express, the iPad, and the printer. The sequence is not important. Allow a moment or two for everything to start up, then see if the printer appears in the "share" icon. Nothing else is necessary.

Hi John, I have tried your suggestion but every time I go to print a document, e-mail etc using the "share" icon, I get an option to select a printer, and when I choose this option I get a message saying "no air print printers were found".

    Any other suggestions? Thanks.

    Update your HP's firmware here:

Please let me know if that fixes it.
