We did not hear about a 6.0 update to Apple TV during WWDC. I'm kinda new to Apple TV (6 months old). Do they useally announce it, or does it just pop up?
Settings > General > Update Software. If there's an update available, you'll see a notification.

No, they don't announce any updates to the general public until they are available.
The AppleTV future roadmap has always been a little unclear - will we see a new version at some point or is the current unit the end of the line? No idea.
This is in contrast to iPhones/iPads where there is an expectation of regular product refreshes.
To be honest AppleTV being based on iOS simply tends to get updates based on recent iOS versions - if you are looking for new features they could probbaly implemented if Apple wanted to whatever version of iOS it was running (or OS X) if you take AppleTV 1.
