Q: How long should the charger be plugged in for after the MacBook is fully charged? Should it be unplugged when not in use?

    Leave it plugged in all the time (if you can). Overcharging is not possible.

    If you are gone for the day, it's OK to disconnect--might save your computer if your location gets hit with a power surge.

     

    The real issue is in maintaining a healthy battery. These batteries are like our muscles--if not used they start to atrophy and die. Run your computer on battery power several times a week to keep the battery exercised.

     

    A very common lament heard around here is, "I never use my battery and yet it failed!" Indeed---it died from lack of exercise. Here is the Apple page on the subject:
