The CD/DVD Drive on my Mac Book Pro stopped working

I just found out that my drive is not working. After inserting a CD or DVD it spins for a while and does nothing. Finder doesn't show any disc inserted and when using a program like Toast Titanium it doesn't recognize the CD/DVD recorder.

I'm running OS X 10.8.4 in a Mac Book Pro 13", 2.3 Ghz Intel Core i5

Is there any utilities that can daignose what the problem might be?

Thanks,

Andres

Another help source (if you haven't already done so).

Go to your OS Help Menu. In the search field type dvd

Click on all the troubleshooting topics & Support Articles that pertain to your issue.

You can also do the same in Disk Utility. Open same up.

At the bottom left of the window, click on the purple button w/the "?" in the middle.

This will bring up the Help Menu.

Your drive may need cleaning. Cleaning kits can be purchased from any store that sells CD/DVDs.

If none of the troubleshooting tips work, the drive may be damaged. If you purchased AppleCare, then Apple should replace it for free.

Else you'll have to decide how valuable is it to you and:

  • Have Apple replace it for a pretty penny,
  • Replace it yourself for a whole lot less, or
  • Decide to live in a pseudo-Retina/Air world with no optical drives.
