keep getting the spinning wheel and my MAc ( OS Lion) is really slow. I read not to defrag nor buy MacKeeper; what do yo advise to speed it up? Also, when I launch my web-browser it takes awhile to open. Thanks

I do not know what the SMART STATUS is. Regarding my activity I have like 85% idle, using 6% and 11% for the system. I have also over 50G free disk free.
I still cannot resolve this issue.

Open Disk Utility, it's in your Utilities folder, click on the top entry in the left part of the DU windw. At the bottom of the window is information about your hard drive. What does it say on the line SMART Status?
You have 50gb free, how much total space des your hard drive have?
How much ram do you have installed?

my HD is 300G and I have 50freeG
Also, when I am loading the Firefox web browser as well as Google Mail this problem is persistent and it
takes a long time to rectify. IPhoto also takes a long time and sometimes I even have to restart the computer as it seems to freeze in that spinning wheel occupied mode.

It is Important to get the Correct and Matching RAM
That site also has videos on how to Install RAM should you need it...
Open Dsk Utility and check the SMART Status of your hard drive first. Then open Activity Monitor select All Processes and see if anything is eating up cpu cycles. Finally how much ram do you have?
