G5 PPC & New Yahoo! Mail - Impossibly Slow

I have a 20" G5 PPC iSight iMac, 2.1 GHz with 2.5 gb of RAM. I'm running 10.4.11. The machine seems to be in good health, Disk Utility shows no problems, plenty of space on the HD and so on.

In the last year or so I've noticed that the machine seriously struggles with certain websites, such as YouTube, Twitter, eBay etc. (endless spinning ball, inability to scroll and so on). I assumed it was something to do with Javascript content. I now use TenFourFox as a browser as both Safari and Firefox became virtually unusable, but the inability to view and use certain sites remains.

I've now been forced to switch to the new version of Yahoo! Mail - this site completely brings the machine to a standstill; typing takes an eternity, the spinning ball is pretty much a constant feature. I can no longer practically use my accounts on the machine.

Should I expect such awful performance and accept that my iMac needs to be replaced?

I also find Yahoo sites in general slow on our remaining PPC Macs with Safari, FireFox and Camino, but there is a browser option that, to me, offers much faster loading of yahoo pages:

http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/

By default it does not support plugins including Flash, but there is a workabout to that issue here:

It may help because you can use more recent browsers like more recent versions of Firefox or Camino browsers.

You'll , also, have a more recent version of Safari although I do not know if that browser will be better with the new Yahoo or not.

But, at least, you'll have a choice of more recent browsers and newer OS with newer features.

Good Luck!

I have heard about capacitors failing on the G5 - whilst I've never heard one pop or seen one go, what effects would it have on the machine's performance?

Although I've not personally dealt with the bad cap issues in the G5s, I get the impression from posts here that it's a rather black and white issue; if they go bad, the computer doesn't slow down---it stops. The older eMacs with bad caps would often start up but lock up hard as soon as any app was launched.

So if the computer is otherwise doing what is should but is slow, bad caps are a rather remote possibility.

As for 10.4 v. 10.5: I have a triple-bootable G4 PowerMac with 10.4, 10.5, and OS9 volumes. I don't see a noticeable improvement in web performance in 10.5 compared to 10.4. It's sluggish with both.

Firefox 3.6.something is the highest that will run on a PowerPC Mac. Changing the OS will not allow a newer version of FireFox. And, alas, Camino is EOL:

Very sad--t'was agood little browser with a small footprint on resources.

Safari does benefit from an OS upgrade. 10.4.11 can only run up to Safari 4.1.3; OS 10.5.8 can run up to 5.0.6.

No more Camino!!!???😢

This is/was/still my preferred browser of choice!

It was a small footprint browser, easy, straight forward to use, very uncomplicated and a nice, clean looking browser and layout.

I use this over any other browser.

Safari has always just been okay for me and Firefox seemed to get more and more complicated and bloated with each new major release. So, I stopped using it.

Is Camino still safe to use on my iMac? I have the most recent release.

I am really bummed to learn of this. I really like Camino!

The group responsible for working on this did a really great job!

OR should I return to using Firefox.

I am on a late 2009 iMac with OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard.

Camino was my wife's first-choice browser for years, and I still use it for sites that benefit from its very handy allow/deny options for cookies and pop-ups.

Safe? I don't know. The last release was 14 Mar 2012, so v2.1.2 has gone 18 months without an update--a long time.

I'll still keep it around or non-critical stuff.

Later versions of FF are not too cludgy, but I avoid extensions and plug-ins like the plague. All that stuff drags down a browser. I don't like the Chrome interface--feels too much like Windoze. The Thunderbird suite has a new browser that is getting some positive feedback here but I've not tried it.

Like you I'm still on SL for the time being on my iMac (specs below).

yahoo updated my mail this morning to their new mail and i am running firefox 3.6.24 on a g4 mac mini. i don't notice the mail running any slower than before so maybe you should look elsewhere for your problems. it gave me the option of running basic or something else, i forget what it was called. i chose basic.

Thanks - seems capacitors are not my problem.

I am at a loss as what to try - the new Yahoo! Mail is completely unusable in TenFourFox 17.0.6; Twitter causes similar hanging and the new eBay homepage with the feed is the same. It's not as bad using Safari 4.1.3, but I moved away from Safari because of other performance issues. Could this be a Javascript problem with TenFourFox (I've previously disabled/enabled all plug-ins without being able to identify the problem)?

I am thinking it couod be an Adobe Flash issue because there are no longer any Adobe updates for PowerPC Macs.

So, an OS X upgrade may not help with that issue, at all.

That stated, an OS upgrade would give you access to a more updated Safari and more recent version of Firefox, so that may help with Internet performance a little better.

You may still have some issues, though.
