Q: The document “xxx.mov” could not be opened. A required codec isn't available."

I am trying to play some QT files but get the following message: "The document “xxx.mov” could not be opened. A required codec isn't available." I click the TELL ME MORE button and am redirected to a page that lists media formats, nothing about codecs, so no way to tell what I need. Help?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8)

Try to install perian which free Quicktime plugin.
http://perian.en.softonic.com/mac

Or play movies with VLC.
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

Perian is no longer supported, don't install it.

Read the main Perian site

VLC is supported
