I got a new iPhone 5 in April, and have been having a problem sending photos via text message. Downloaded photos send fine, but photos taken with my iPhone take a long time to send or fail. I don't see any settings that should affect it.

I have an iPhone 5 as well.
I have noticed that in bad cell service, photos 95% of the time don't send.
Is bad cell service your issue?
Arre you sending MMS, or are you sending an iMessage with a photo attached? It makes a difference. MMS is a carrier specific task, however photos taken with the iPhone 5 of a high resolution and can take some time to send, especially if you are in a low signal area. Similar issues can arise when it comes to iMessage, however, iMessage uses data and can be done via cellular or wifi and will also be signal dependant.

Your Wi-Fi connection may be very slow or not working at all.
In this case a photo would most likely not send.
I would reboot your Wi-Fi router.
If this happens on wifi, then you are using iMessage versus MMS. Problems with iMessage can be diagnosed here http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2755. It can include bandwidth issues, your connection to the Internet, etc.
Not sure. Just selecting a photo, accessing the menu and clicking on message.
The wi-fi is working for everything else, and the same thing happens in other places where I'm using wi-fi.
With iMessage, you are not the only part of the equation. The recipient has to have a good data connection as well for the iMessage to go through. If either of you drop a connection or have a problem with the connection, then you can get an iMessage failure. Again, I suggest using the support document I provided the link for to troubleshoot your messages.

I just looked back over the troubleshooting ChrisJ4203 recommended, and I think I restarted my phone. Not the reset to factory settings, just the restart. Hope it works for you!
