Found a small chip on the upper right corner of my iMac screen. Has anyone had this repaired? Can you tell about the experience?

Wondered about the cost and whether there were any low-cost solutions short of full glass replacement on the monitor.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.5)

It's not as simple as just replacing the glass ( I am not sure if this is actually glass or a very high grade and high tensile strength polycarbonate) because the glass has been blacked out to hide the front face of the iMac's aluminum chassis and panel magnets plus, there is the steel framework behind the glass (that is used as the attachment surface for magnets that hold the glass frame to the iMac) that is bonded by strong adhesive to the clear panel.

Chances are the OP will need to just replace the entire clear panel assembly.

No easy way to just replace the clear panel, itself.

Because you are running 10.7.5 my guess is you are running a 2011 or earlier iMac. In that case there is no repair to the glass itself, the choices are live with the chip or have the glass replaced. Costs will depend on where you buy it and who does the repair. This could be done by a careful user, all that is needed is the glass and a pair of good suction cups to remove and replace the glass. If you have AppleCare it's possible Apple may replace the glass, you would need to take it to an Apple Store or AASP to be looked at to get a determination.

Your location will influence the charges to quite an extent. In some countries the Apple retail stores and premium resellers have a price list for repairs but in others, particularly where the are no Apple retail outlets, no price lists exist.

Looking at your user name my guess is you are in Northern Europe which is well catered for. So call and ask.

Incidentally, from what I read elsewhere, unless you are technically practical and competent it would be better that you allow the professionals to fit the new glass or you may do damage that would then no longer be covered by any warranty or extended warranty that you have.

Yes I know al lhat, the OP indicated he's using 10.7.5, none of the late 2012 machines shipped with Lion (at least to my knowledge) so that indicates it's a 2011 or earlier machine. All he needs to do is buy the glass from a reseller or even Ebay and he could easily replace it.

i am talking about the 2011 models. They are bulit the same as my 2009 and the 2010 models.

Take a good look and the pane/panelassembly

The clear pane/panel, by itself, is not an easy replacement item.

I don' think you are going to find the pane, by itself. as a replacement item.

You need to purchase the entire panel and frame assembly.

I did a quick eBay check and all of the panels I found for sale have the complete unit frame and all.

Not just the pane, alone.

Also, found many of what you need on eBay.

Just search for iMac glass.

Here are my results

It's not too expensive a part to obtain

It's a, relatively easy item for a user to remove and replace yourself, if you don't want to truck your iMac to an Apple Store.

Here's but just one video showing you how to remove the panel and how to reinstall it or another new panel.

The glass screen is held on the iMac by strong magnets that latch onto the metal frame on the back of the glass panel.
