Other then tethering for Internet connection use, you cannot pair for somethings else.

Thats actually what I was trying to do. I managed to connect via a friends i phone to collect e-mail under his guidence the other day, and I was trying to replicate that with may own phone.

I thought I had to pair the phone (successful)

Connect to the phone (where I got the Message)  hence I got no further

    Turn on Hotspot

and bingo I could connect the mac to collect my mail via the phone thus consigning my phone dongle to the scrapyard.....

Cracked it.  Just in case anyone else stumbles on this with the same challenge.

You do not create the connection from the phone as you might expect.

Once the phone is paired,  The connection needs to be established in Network settings from the Mac, Highlight Bluetooth PAN  in network settings and click connect.

Once the connection is established and the button turns green, you can then browse internet, collect mail etc via your phone.

Once proven you can have a ceremoninal burning of the USB dongle you've come to love and hate for your connections............   Fact is you only need one apple device with a SIM and the others connect via personal hotspot.    So obvious  after the event its a "DOH" moment.  £15 a month saved on the USB Dongle. wish I'd discovered it 4 years ago..........
