If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.1.3. Regardless of your iOS device, plug it into iTunes and check for updates.  iTunes will determine the highest possible release of iOS for the device and inform you if an update is available or not.  You cannot install a higher iOS version then the maximum that iTunes will determine for the model of device you have attached.
