Macbook extreme lag for a sudden

Hi there guys,

I have a macbook pro which is 2011-2012. One day i opened my computer and suddenly it became very laggy. I couldn't stop it and i searched for answes in the internet. I check my cpu usage and my cpuusages sits araound 9% idle. I don't know what is causing the lag and i had nothing oopen. I tried to relaunch my finder then there was no lag for a sudden then when finder reopened it started to lag. I could hear the noise from the fans but i wasn't doing anything with no applications open. I checked my disk to see if there were any damage, but nothing. I couldn't find out what was causing the lag and i am using the MB to type this Discussion.

Any ithings i can do to resolve this lag? Thanks.

Top Priority is to make certain you have current backups, as this could be a symptom of a failing Hard Drive.

Use this article to examine your typical memory usage:

Using Activity Monitor to read System Memory and determine how much RAM is being used

How much total RAM is installed?

How much of the pie is Green?

How much of the pie is Green + Blue?

How much PageOuts since last restart?

You can also take a screen shot with command-Shift-4 and drag over the important area, and post that screenshot file with the little camera Icon in the forum header.

If the count-up counter for PageOuts is also low, then you are not short of real RAM.

It is also possible that your Hard drive is not dying, but simply went to sleep and powered down when you did not expect it. You can change the settings for

[√] Put the Hard Disk to sleep when possible ...

... in Energy Saver preferences.

Note that there is one independent set of Energy Saver preferences for Power Adapter, and another set for battery operation.
