iPod Nano - used as a hard drive and now can't get it to work as an iPod again.

hi

I recently used my iPod Nano (4th gen) as a hard drive to move some photos from a PC to my Macbook Air. That all went swimmingly but now I can't get it to work as an iPod again.

When I open iTunes with the Nano connected iTunes doesn't recognise it's there. It doesn't bring up the 'use as a disk' / 'manually manage music' options so I can't 'untick' these and I can't get any music to load onto it. The sync option isn't available.

The Nano also doesn't seem to remember any settings (clicker, language etc) and everytime I connect it to the Mac (trying to fix it) I have to reset it (clicker drives me mad).

Any thoughts on what I'm doing wrong gratefully received.
