I just purchased a Dell S2240L 21.5 inch LED Backlit LCD Monitor which is not working with my mac mini (late 2012) model over VGA. It worked fine with a PC though.

I'm connecting using VGA !! And yeah it worked fine with other monitors using VGA !!
The 2012 does NOT have VGA out. It has an HDMI port and a Thunderbolt port --backward compatible with miniDisplayPort. (In fact, no Mac mini has EVER had a VGA port, not even the G4 model, but that's neither here nor there.)
And, besides, that monitor has HDMI input, so an HDMI cable should be ALL you need.
There comes a miniDIsplayPort to VGA cable, which I used to connect to me older LG display. But this time it worked with a HDMI cable.

I'm having the same problem as you had with the Dell S2240L Monitor.
So you're saying the Mini DisplayPort to VGA adaptor didn't work with the Dell Monitor, and the HDMI worked?
I'm asking because I have a Mini DisplayPort to VGA adaptor and this has worked well with most displays, projectors etc. If you say the HDMI cable works, I'll need to buy that. Please confirm.

You can go for a HDMI cable it will work with your minitor.

You can go for any HDMI cable. Apple is best, but very costly. :)
