can't close System Preferences on my macbook pro

Have you tried to force quit the application?

cmd + opt + esc will bring up the force quit dialog box.

That doesn't work

what happens when you try?

does the force-quit window open?

can you select System Preferences (not responding) ?

can you click (force quit) button?

do you get any error messages?

From your Finder "Go" menu > "Go to folder" and copy & paste this path:

~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist

Then move that plist to your Desktop and try quitting.
