Visited the Apple Store. Apparently the cause of the Red X Icon was that my Ipod hard drive gave out, is broken, will never work again. The only solution was to replace my ipod. They swapped my 120GB Ipod classic for a 160GB Ipod Classic for $130.
Better than buying a brand new one...but still painful. My Ipod was only 2 1/2 years old. I was very unpleasantly surprised to learn that the hard drive could brake in such a short period. I also didn't realize that an "ipod" was largely a disposable device. Replacing parts is really not an option.
Oh well, I'm happy to have an ipod again!
