It's hard to offer troubleshooting suggestions other than the basics when the OS system is unknown. Each OS has it's own troubleshooting and/or diagnostics.

It would help us to know which comp model you have, which OS & version you're using, how much RAM, etc. You can have this info displayed on the bottom of every post by completing your system profile and filling in the information asked for.

Since you're running Mountain Lion, try starting up whilst holding down the COMMAND and the R keys. This should boot you into your Recovery partition. Once there, use Disk Utility to verify and, if needed, repair your boot volume.
