There's a sound that's I want eliminated that's produced by some kind of recurring event which I have failed to identify. On the iPhone it's easy to locate, but here I'm not sure how to locate it and then delete it.
I use Mountain Lion.

System Prferences>Sound>Sound effects tab, then click on each sound to see if you can tell if it's one of those.

Yes, it's more in that department BDAqua than what Paul suggests.
But I don't want to discontinue the sound from the library of sounds, all I want is find out which app uses it, go there and uncheck a box.
Is that achievable? I must have started it at some point and all I want is undo it.

Can you try to describe the sound?
It could be an alert from mail, or a notification of incoming tweets, or something from a widget you've installed.

Yes, it's like a pong! sound.
This sound has bugged me for a long time, it's nothing new.
FWIW, system sounds are located in /System/Library/Components/CoreAudio.component/Contents/SharedSupport/SystemSou nds/, but I wouldn't muck with any, since that'll hose up your system.
Your best bet is to determine which app is causing the sound activate.

Only you know what's running on your machine. Launch Activity Monitor in /Utilities, select all processes, click on the %CPU column, and then watch to see which process pops up when the sound emanates.

I did what you suggested and when I heard the sound looked at the Activity Monitor, unfortunatwly, it changes every second and not all of it fits on the screen.
Choose View > Update Frequency, and then choose Less oftien. That's the best I can offer.

Let's take a stab and assume the sound is Mail generated. How to change or cancel the sound? Is there a way? I can't remember how I set these alerts in the first place.
Mail->Preferences->General and that's where the mail sound is set. That's all I have.
