There are no viruses affecting OS X at the present. Perhaps you could describe your problem.

When I am using Safari to browse the Net eg we are searching for Home improvement products and my MacBook starts to 'freeze' and 'crash' when trying to go to a further page within a website to view product information. We are using a 2nd MacBook in our home and not experiencing this problem.
Also I think I accidently opened an email sent to me by a friend who later reported having their yahoo email account hacked into.

This could be a variety of problems which almost certainly don't involve any type of malware, but you would need to post a crash report for anybody to be able to help you with that.

There is no currently known malware that can impact OS X by simply reading an e-mail. You would have to open an attachment or click on a link with Java enabled for there to be any chance of infection. Even then, most such malware is designed for the Windows operating system and it's applications.
