Unidentified arrow icon in menu bar (10.8.4)

Hi,

For almost as long as I've had the computer there has been this little diagonal arrow in the menu bar from a program which I cannot identify. Whether I right or left click on it, all it does is highlight blue so I am unable to identify it this way. Does anyone have any idea what program has left it there and how I might proceed to get rid of it? So long as someone can identify it, a reinstall/uninstall would probably remove it I am guessing?

That is VMware Fusion. You should be able to just drag it out of the menu bar, or option drag it out.

If you don't use it you can just cmd-drag it off.

@William Lloyd: I do have VMware Fusion 5.0.3 installed. The icon remains in the menu bar regardless of whether VMware Fusion is open though.

@macjack: cmd-drag only seems to work with non-3rd party app icons (such as Bluetooth, Time Machine etc.)

Do you have vmware helper in your startup items? If so, try taking it out of there.

When you open up System Preferences, do you see the VMware icon down at the bottom, under "Other?"

If so, click on the icon, and deselect "Show in menu bar."

@~Bee: Unfortunately, VMware is not under other in my System Preferences.

@CT: Your soluton worked! Under Users & Groups --> Login Items was the VMware Helper. I had it checked to hide, but actually removing it saw the icon disappear from the menu bar after a restart. Thanks heaps 🙂
