I am trying to restore old photos. I backed them up on Time Machine, then deleted them all for service on my laptop. Now when I try to restore them from Time Machine, the message is "The item 'iPhoto Library' can't be copied becuase there isn't enough free space." I have been trying to restore from iPhoto library (time machine) to iPhoto library (current). Thoughts?

Unless a lot of data has been added, there should be room. Were you nearly out of space before doing this?
Was your HD replaced?
How much space is free on your Mac?
And how large is the iPhoto library on the backups?
Are you running Snow Leopard (10.6)?
Where are the backups (external HD, Time Capsule, or what)?
Ask if you're not sure how to find any of that, and post back with the answers.
I backed up everything onto an external harddrive through Time Machine. After that I proceeded to delete all personal documents, photos, and movies, and then emptied the trash. After I took my laptop in (nothing was replaced and no data was added), I tried to resore everything I had backed up. I have been unable to restore just what was in iPhoto due to the "not enought free space".
It is an OS X 10.6.8.
When in Time Machine, there is not number next to iPhoto library indicating how large it is (I thought maybe I didn't properly back iPhoto up and that I had lost my most recent pictures, but I can go 6 months back and restore those pictures from time machine and there is no number indicating how much space next to the iPhoto library backup from 6 months ago either.)

Ah, by using the Time Machine browser (the "Star Wars" display)? If so, Apple doesn't make it clear, but what you need to do is restore the entire backup -- that will put everything back just the way it was.

We don't need to know now, but that's shown at the bottom of every Finder window, if you go to a Finder menubar and select View > Show Status Bar.
