Transfer old Airport Extreme data to new Airport Extreme

Is there a way to transfer setup data from an old Airport Extreme base station to a new Airport Extreme base station i.e. the new Airport Extreme base station introduced at the 2013 WWDC?

Yes this should be doable. (Note: I do not have an 802.11ac model to verify the following but this is the normal procedure with the older devices.)

From the AirPort Utility (v6.x):

  • Select the base station that you want to export the configuration file from.
  • Click on Edit.
  • From the utility's menu bar, select File > Export Configuration File ...
  • In the Save As field enter the desired file name.
  • Choose where you want to save this file in the Where field.
  • Click on Save.
  • Next, select the base station that you want to import the configuration file to.
  • Click on Edit.
  • From the utility's menu bar, select File > Import Configuration File ...
  • Using the Finder window, select the file that you just exported earlier.
  • Click on Update.
