Sounds more like a faulty keyboard that a keyboard preference problem, but it's hard to tell without more details.
Is it a wired (USB) or wireless keyboard...?
After the screen goes black, does it come back on right away or do you have to restart...?
its a wireless keyboard. after the screen goes black ... i press any key and the screen comes back again. I did call Apple this morning -- they got me to unplug the computer wait 15sec and restart the iMac holding down ... Cmd + Alt + P & R simultaniously and wait for 2 chime sounds and release the keys ... so far so good. But as I said - this seem to be ramdom when it does it .. So I will wait and see... otherwise it may have to be taken to Apple
Thanks for your help.

That's good, they had you reset the SMC and NVRAM.
Here are the related Apple article's for those resets.
see > Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
and > About NVRAM and PRAM
If that does not help or the problem returns, come back here or call.
