i have backed up my iphone 3 and transferred all my data to my iphone 5. everything came through except for a ring tone i had purchased. Where do i find it?

Ringtones aren't included in a backup. If it's not in the Tones section of your computer's iTunes library then you should be able to copy it over from iPhone 3 by connecting it to your computer's iTunes and doing File > Devices > Transfer Purchases, and you can then sync it to your new phone.

Have you checked to see whether it had already been copied over to the Tones section of your computer's iTunes library ? If not, and if it's still in the store, then you could try contacting iTunes support and see if they will grant you a re-download : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page
