iTunes 11.0.4 crashing frequently

I've used iTunes for years with no trouble, but starting with 11.0.3 I've been experiencing regular crashes. When I installed 11.0.3 the app would crash 2-3 times daily; initially 11.0.4 was better (though still buggy), but today it's crashed 3 times. The crashes occur either when I try to delete things from the library or right after a CD has been burned.

Additionally, I get a beach ball whenever I switch between a playlist and the music library, and whenever I add or remove songs. It lasts only for a few seconds (normally), but it doesn't seem like it should be happening. This is all becoming extremely frustrating, and I wonder whether anyone knows of a fix or is experiencing similar problems. Recommendations for other applications which can manage music libraries and burn CDs would also be appreciated--I'm just about ready to quit using iTunes completely.

My solution I found was to change the network settings in System Preferences. Apparently, in one of the recent updates, my previous IPv6 settings no longer worked. Previewously, it was configured to "Off." I had set this a couple years ago since that version of iTunes didn't like IPv6 and setting it to "Off" fixed the issue. Well, I guess that changed and what it needs to be set to now is "Local Link Only." My wife's Mac has it set to "Automatic" (I had never changed it on her machine). What is interesting, when I deselected "Off", that option of "Off" disappeared and one only has the options of "Automatic," "Manual," and "Local Link Only." The only thing that tipped me off that this could be related to IPv6 was that the latest update to Airport Utility was not working. It could not see my network -- although my WiFi worked just fine.

So, if you are not familiar with where to make this change, simply do this:

System Preferences > Network > Advanced > TCP-IP > Configure IPv6. Change to "Local Link Only" and hit "Apply."

Good luck.

Unfortunately did not work for me. I am trying to put a playlist together and when I click on the artist it'll balloon and crash but only on certain artists. Trying to put a playlist together for an event this weekend, kind of important as the event is not mine!!! Would be great if I could get some help on this!!!! 🙂

Here is the code I'm getting when it crashes.

I was having the same problem as everyone. Open itunes > add a file > itunes crashed. Open itunes > turned on Itunes match > itunes crashed. What I did to stop the crashing is a simple process

1. Download appzapper - Link http://www.appzapper.com/

2. Open appzapper > drag itunes from the Application folder to appzapper

3. A message about mac security will pop up. Click ok, and uncheck the 2nd setting.

4. Redrag itunes into appzapper, click on ZAP!

5. download itunes from apple's website.

After I followed these steps, I was able to add tv shows, music, movies and sign into itunes match.

I tried the appzapper but the problem is the same after I reinstall iTunes.

On which device are you running iTunes 11.0.4 ?
On my iMac, MacBook Pro Retina and MacBook Pro 2011, iTunes 11.0.4 runs perfectly but on my fathers MacBook Pro 2012 it doesn't.... Maybe it's an error which only comes up on MacBook Pros 2012 ?

I am running on MacBook Pro (late 2008) and have had no problems at all with iTunes barring the usual lack of cover art and occasional non-playing content.

Using 3rd party apps to remove and mess around with OSX implies that there may be an OSX issue rather than a specific iTunes app issue.

How big is your library? Where is your library held? Have you updated OSX to the latest version? How much memory (RAM) does your Mac have?

One of the biggest problems I had was using iTunes with Safari running - I was running very low on RAM so I updated my machine to 8GB and this has run like lightning ever since. On client's machines, iTunes sometimes has permissions issues and there are nearly always permissions issues on the drive which you should clear up first using the Disk Utility. Don't forget to check the drive as well as the disk image - repair anything out of kilter first.

There is nothing wrong with iTunes per se otherwise you would have millions inundating the forums and Apple. What frequently happens is that somewhere down the line an update is not installed correctly or is missed. In this case, try taking a copy of your iTunes library off line, deleting iTunes and reinstalling.

I have a 27" iMac (late 2009) with a fresh install of the latest OSX.

How big is your library? - My library size is about 30GBs

Where is your library held? - I store my library on a 1TB external HDD.

Have you updated OSX to the latest version? - Yes I do have the latest verision of OSX.

How much memory (RAM) does your Mac have? - I have 20GB of memory in my system.

I did try just reinstall iTunes but was still having the same problem. When I used appzapper, it removed all traces of iTunes software from my Mac and was able to do a fresh installation of iTunes. Most likely when I updated my Mac from the app store, the installation of iTunes was corrupted or was not install correctly.

I was getting errors like 1144, 1504, and 1705.

I'have the solution. This is what you have to do but save your data in the iTunes library.

  1. Open iTunes ( maybe you can't see anything but you got it if there is a dot in the dock under the iTunes icon.
  2. Next Open Finder
  3. Go to (Music/ and delete the iTunes folder while iTunes is open.
  4. iTunes has an Error
  5. Restart iTunes and it works 🙂

Well I have personal good news. At least this gives hope to others who have not yet tried this. I did the AppZapper/reinstall ploy and so far it's worked for me.

I had done a clean install of Snow Leopard a coupla weeks ago and iTunes was upgraded to 11.0.4 at the same time. Since then I couldn't play more than two songs without iTunes locking up on me. I was importing some old CDs and it would crash every 3 or 4 discs into the process.

I renamed all my current iTunes folder/files ("NOT_xxx") and put them in a nondescript folder of their own. I used AppZaper to clean me out and downloaded a fresh version of the app. One I launched it I replaced all the new folders/files with the old ones, removing the "NOT_xxx" prefix I'd added so the new iTunes could locate them.

I have now been playing music for about four hours during which I've ingested several more CDs of music at the same time with no problems whatsoever.
