How do I 'detach' my midi controller from the channel strip?

I want to use my midi controller to control 2 instruments at the same time with the same fader (odd I know). I am also sick of changing channel strip to alter a parameter and my midi keyboard automatically switching to that instrument.

I suppose I could be considered a noob. Any help would be appreciated.
