There are a number of steps that I'd recommend looking into in the interest of getting your MacBook Air and your trackpad working together again.

While the article does mention 'mouse' rather than 'trackpad,' it is still relevant for trackpads.

thank you for your reply, but I had already tried the troubleshooting page. So I decided
to give the trackpad about half an hour time to make up it's mind and, lo and behold, it worked!!
