Have a 4 yr old hp officejet pro 8500. As such have no support available from hp. Apple says to contact hp to see how to install latest firmware for printing from my ipad. Am I at a dead end?

I downloaded and installed - at least per the computer- the latest firmware version for my printer from HP site. However, when I make a self report from the printer it still shows the same prior firmware. Yes, I re booted the printer, as well as the computer. I also got a message that an "unidentified device driver" was installing, then a message that the installation of that unidentified device driver failed. I am presuming that was the printer driver but it did not say and the message just says to consult the manufacturer, doesnt say which one. Here we go again. It is always some Catch 22 situation with these things.
