Since iMessage and FaceTime use data (i.e. cellular connection or Wifi,) you can have airplane mode and Wifi on at the same time, prohibiting your phone from using your cellular connection (so you won't be charged,) and forcing your phone to connect to a Wifi network. Because of this, you can make FaceTime calls and send iMessages on Wifi and NOT be charged for any of it. This applies to all apps and functions of the iPhone that require an internet connection. If you're connected to Wifi all your phone's internet needs will go through the Wifi, not your cellular connection, so you won't be charged for any of it.

No because you are sendin gover wifi and using whatever plan you have for internet if you are usin gyour home wifi. If sending imessage over the cellular data then you are using some of your cellular data plan
If you have airplan mode on an dhave wifi on and you pay for wifi at the hotel then that is all you will use. Make sure that when you are out and about you turn off cellular data on your phone. If you find free wifi anywhere and you wish to use it you can always turn airplan mode on and wifi back on and connect to the free network
So, I have an iPhone 4S. Still under iOS 6.1.3
With Airplane mode on, and Wifi Mode on, as I launch the Messages app, I get a message stating "You must disaple airplane mode to send or receive messages." - Cancel - Disable.
If I 'Cancel', and try to send a message to someone that is on an iPod (so that is an apple id, not a phone number), I get a message stating 'Turn Off Airplane Mode or Use Wi-Fi to Send and Receive Messages". Then I can select either Ok or Settings. If I choose Ok, nothing happens and I can't still send anything. If I choose Settings... It takes me to settings but I don't know where to tell the telephone to use Wi-Fi for messsages. There is nothing about that in either the 'Messages' settings or the Wi-Fi settings.
How do I direct the iPhone to use Wi-Fi? It is already connected to wi-fi. I can navigate and do other things.
Thx!
I just figured it out... feel a bit dumb.. but will share in case anyone else runs into this.
In the settings for the 'message' app, there is a button to setup 'send & receive' through your apple id. Just click on it, set your apple id up there.. and now it works..
So if I'm on vacation and paid for a week of wifi at the hotel, that is my only charge?
As long as you are not using your cellular data connection, you would not incur any additional charges other than the use of the hotel WiFi.
What about FaceTime?

Only iPhone 4S supports FaceTime over cellular so it does not apply to you having an iPhone 4.
Oops, OP's thread is quite old.
