Q: How long does it take to back up I phone?

I tried to set up iCloud on my 3 g iPhone after up grading and I think I might have xxxxx it I backed up phone to comp and when I tried to restore it  said to restart

Phone which I did then I had to set up apple I'd  then tried to set up iCloud and pushed the wrong button ( back up phone to iCloud) and it has been going for an hour. Help? Thanks
