Well, you were told wrong. Here is a snippet from the official Apple Support article on the question:
Accepted payment methods for iCloud storage upgrades include credit cards, debit cards, and iTunes Store credit. If you don't have enough iTunes store credit to complete your upgrade, you'll be charged the remaining amount. Apple Store gift cards aren't accepted as payment for upgrading iCloud storage. Learn how to manage the amount of storage you're using.

Really? Then why does the link I provided on January 30 and updated in May of 2017 say you can:

You just redeem it. When you increase your iCloud Storage, the monthly subscription amount is taken from the payment method on your Apple/iTunes account. If your Apple/iTunes account has a credit (i.e. from a redeemed iTunes card), it will take it from that.

I just successfully upgraded iCloud storage for an account that did not have a credit card registered for payment. All that is required is that you have sufficient credit (via itunes cards) to pay the monthly fee. I had thought it might be rejected since there was no credit card on file. But it all went through, no problem. Only need to be sure there is sufficient balance every month when the storage payment comes due.
According to Apples own support page you can.
No. Added storage is an annual payment so you need to use a credit card for Apple to be sure you can pay in the future.
Yes you can use your store credit now. It will still authorize the payment since you pay for it now on a month to month basis.
Regarding the question for using iTunes cards to increese the storage in the cloud is it also possible not only month by month , but also by the year or years ?,
Apple only offers monthly plans now.
Thanks for the help
cheers
You are welcome.
