Double checking about access to files on back up hard drive?

I have downloaded all of my files onto a back up hard drive purchased at the apple store - I'm not a computer whizz and this question may seem pointless, but if I delete all my current photos and iMovie projects, will I definitely be able to access them when I plug my hard drive in and if I want to can I put them back onto my computer?
