Is there a 4GB limit per slot? Would I be able to use 8+8 to get to 16GB and leave two slots unused?

iMac 2011 model. There is a 16GB memory limit. According to the article is seems like they assume 4x4GB = 16GB. Would I be able to insert 8+8 = 16GB and leave two slots unused.
