Q: Why can't I register for itunes U without giving card details if the content is free?

Why do Apple need to keep my credit card details when I'm not purchasing anything?

I feel this is open to theft and abuse

    The iTunes Store by demand of the content owners requires confirmation of your locality, something which is probably only possible by requiring a payment method issued in your country.  Since iTunes U isn't a separate store from the rest of the iTunes Store, it's bound by the same mechanism even though you aren't buying anything.

     

    You can either provide a credit card or prepaid iTunes cards, or you can set up an account by downloading a free app via the instructions here:

    Read the steps carefully as the order in which you follow them is critical. Note that you can do this only when creating a new Apple ID. You cannot use an existing ID.
