hey im going to buy a iphone 5 from walmart at the end of summer i was hoping to just buy the iphone 5 no contract and no carrier. i know that sounds fuuny but i might get straight talk for it later in the future. SO BOTTEM LINE i was wondering if i needed a sim card or anything to use the iphone 5

You can NOT purchase an unlocked iPhone from Walmart. The ONLY source for unlocked iPhones in the US is Apple.
And yes, once you get an unlocked iPhone 5, you MUST have a SIM in it to activate it.
You will need SIM card to use any phone with any GSM carrier. And until you activate the iPhone with a carrier, the iPhone will be good for nothing other than making emergency calls. So there's no point in buying any phone until you're ready to sign up with some carrier.

StraightTalk no longer sells SIM cards for unlocked iPhones. They are only permitting StraightTalk iPhones on their service (which is CDMA) now.
You can't, so you have to think about some other option. If you get an unlocked iPhone, then how about T-Mobile or AT&T?
If you really want to use a CDMA network, then go and buy a phone from Verizon.
