File a police report.    There is no way for you to track it by serial #.

thanks so much I wish we could...I am so upset at the individual who took it.  I have a business and I needed desperately to get another one and so it was impossible to keep it activated and track it thru ICloud.  Maybe that is a good idea if apple developed a tracking thru serial number devise of some sort...if they have created so many gadgets etc. why not that service?  It would have been awesome if we could do so.  Just to relieve how angry I am about this whole "Apple Picking" crime.  Thanks so much for your help.

I suspect Apple doesn't do that for security reasons.  Now perhaps the NSA might be able to help.

If you had enabled Find my iPhone in settings you might be able to track it. Otherwise, no.

There is relief coming in the next version of iOS.   There will be a prohibition on wiping a device by anyone other than the original owner, which should dramatically curb stealing.

When registering a new iPhone in your iCloud the old one disappears? I thought it would be listed too.

Funny..lol  NASA has better thing to take care of ...than to waste time looking for my phone ...but its a great dream....not even the police will send a dispatch to where they stole it from...we have to go in person now since its not that important. :/

yes it disappears in my case I had to buy a new one that same day. I had to keep my same number had I not then i could still track it down.  I wish we could have tracked it down with the serial number thru ICloud or Lost and Found app.

Why was it impossible to track it?
