TM and Ext Bootable Drive

Super article. Confirmed that I can operate the ghost of my now dead iMac via the carbon copy clone of it on a WD ext. drive using my MBA as the host. But my current concern is how can I have TimeMachine back up my iMac ghost. When TM started it seemed to be attempting to back up my MBA, but maybe I misunderstood: maybe it was about to back up the WD which was USB-connected to my MBA.

MacBook Air, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4), MBA via AirPort to AEB/TM

Yes. There's the GoFlex attached to the AEB and the WD attached to the MBA.

TM did not work on this setup, so instead of operating the MBA off of my bootable WD, I will have to operate my MBA off of itself and use the WD as merely external storage.

This setup gives me some concerns, but I will see if it works.
