how to select page size and fit to page size?

hi wayne. i think i got hung up on the Set Paper View part. where do i do this?

i have been searching help for various terms and i cannot find this.

i mean, you want me to set the paper size /first/ i gather? then i scale the file to fit this paper size presumably?

THEN i select Print and i select the PRINTER and then i select the PAPER TRAY where the paper is i am guessing?

it's like duck-duck-goose trying to find printer settings on the mac. i feel like i am in some spacetime wormhole described by stephen hawking or some sci-fi movie where the guy goes back in time and he becomes his father's father or something. first select the printer, then set the paper size then scale the document then find the printer then select the paper...

couldn't they simpify this and at a /minimum/ put the ability to set PAPER SIZE in a pulldown item? i have to jump though about ten dialogs and ten pulldowns just to get a document to print on something other than 8 x 11.

can i please ask you - - do i SAVE this setting to the Printer Settings so i can print to 11 X 17 from Numbers quicker next time or do i have to do this jig all over again next time i have another document to print at 11 x 17?

no offense but learning curve is no joke. i am reading up on CUPS right now just so i can keep the printer dialog from defaulting to automatically rotate (makes it much bigger each time, wastes ink and i don't want it to automatically change anything as a default) and to keep it from automatically scaling my images to fit (again no thank you on the automatic resizing).

i mean, i have been trying to fix this for two years and i am figuring out i have to get on some kind of online interface to do this?

do you know anything about CUPS? seems uber complicated...

wayne. i am not asking about "sheet orientation" by which i think you mean PAGE LAYOUT? i am asking if i have to go through these steps in inspector every time i want to print to 11 x 17. i am asking if there is a way to SAVE A PRESET to print to 11 x 17. i have to print to 11 x 14 and 11 x 17 and 12 x 18 in various cases and i want to set up a PRESET for all my Numbers documents so i don't have to do three of these for every one of my documents.

is this possible? i mean, is there a way to set presets so i don't have to do twenty steps every time i decide to print to 11 x 17 or 12 x 18 or 8 x14?

in Mac OS my understanding is that in order to set the DEFAULT settings for MAC PRINTER UI you have to get into the CUPS system. there is no other way. if you know of a way to get the mac printer UI to default to 100% size (instead or scaling to fit) or not rotating (instead of automatically rotating) i would love to hear it.

maybe you are saying you don't need to get into CUPS to set defaults when working in the print UI for iWork software?

doesn't this /require/ me to /open/ the template then create a document?

i think you have a level of expertise with this software that let's you answer a question in a way that i don't understand. either that or perhaps as a new user my questions are not clear to you.

can you tell me if it is possible to create a SETTING that will let me open a document that is SENT TO ME so that i don't have to run through all these steps just to do what i am asking to do in the title of this post? i mean, i am going to print this explanation out so i can refer to it in the future but i don't want to have to go through all these steps every time someone sends me a document.

i also don't want to have to ask them to format the document as a pdf at 11 x 17 and 12 x 18 every time they send me something.

does that question make sense?

AFAIK your answer is indicating that i can set up a TEMPLATE that will let me /create/ new documents by using this template and what i am asking is if there is a way to print a document to 11 x 17 or to 12 x 18 with PRESETS as i do in Preview....
