Why can't iTunes "find" my iPod touch?

My iPod won't sync to my iTunes because it says the apps on my iPod couldn't be determined and then it said my iPod couldn't be found. What is going on and how do I fix it? It won't let me add music or anything and I've already tried resetting it and when I tried restoring it, it said my iPod again couldn't be found.
