IOS downloads, do I have to buy the updates?

I have an I PAD 2 and I need to update the IOS but when I go to General then to setting there is no

software update button. How do I download the updates to my device and do I have to buy them?

The upgrade is free. You have to connect to iTune (computer).

Update to IOS 5 or later.

Update from the device itself is supported only on iOS 5 and later. You must update using iTunes from your computer. Follow the instructions here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4972
