I am on my third iphone 4s since October and the WiFi is greyed out on this one as well. I am shipping it back as soon as I can find a phone to use in the meantime. I really have tried every reset and restore in the book. I have been on the web for hours trying to solve this. Every settings tweak and router reset has been tried. I believe the os has something to do with not recognizing the chip as well. My phone is under warranty so I guess I'll ship them back repeatedly until this is resolved. Not a great way to handle loyal customers.
Here is my experience....
I too had my wifi grey out during Thanksgiving weekend, a day after my iOS 7 update. Bluetooth was gone too, which is a major issue because I rely heavily on bluetooth in my car when I'm on the road for work, us Californians can't hold and talk.
Anyway, I tried every reset and settings change I could find on the internet and had no luck until I tried the blowdryer method. Wifi and Bluetooth came back after resetting when phone cooled down. However, in the middle of the next day, I lost both again.
Went to Genius last night, phone out of warranty (a little over a year and half old), was told pay up $200 or deal without Wifi and Bluetooth. I asked if I could send Apple my Verizon overage data bill...the "genius" was not in the mood to joke. When I asked if it was related to the iOS update, or if this was a common problem, he just laughed, and responded with, "No, it's obviously a hardware issue... hence your blowdry attempt, and just becasue you go online and read a forum and see a few people having the same issue... doesnt mean its a big issue." I told him I'd buy a Samsung and left.
The days of Apple replacing a faulty product are long gone. For the record, my phone is in perfect condition... not a scratch.. and I've never had an issue until this.
**Update: This morning, I blowdried again, and both WiFi and BT are working... for now. Can't wait to switch phones in March.
wifi would not turn on, bluetooth was fine.
reboots and reset network did not help
BUT this helped
- turning airplane mode and do not disturb on
- powering off device for 2 minutes
- powering on and disabling modes.
wifi went from "off" to "not connected" and worked fine from then on.
i know it's much more exciting to get dramatic and scream and cry and threated apple for a device that worked fine for a couple years, but sorry to report it was not a real problem.
I tried the airplane mode procedure in addition to the Apple sanctioned procedures and none of them worked. The only thing that worked temporarily was leaving the phone in a cold environment, in my case this was my car.
The rep that helped me at the Apple store last October told me it was a hardware failure, in particular, the chip that both the WiFi and Bluetooth share failed.
I should mention that 2 of the 3 that have been replaced thus far were running iOS 6. The third and last one that was replaced was running iOS 7.
Same issue here after iOS 7. Actually mine just stopped out of know where. I called Verizon and they told me I had to purchase a new phone. Problem is I was out of warranty October 2013 and not legible to upgrade till October 2014. Verizon said she would give me $300 off a phones Retail price. I just don't have an extra 200-300 dollars to spend with christmas around the corner. I found a video where a guy showed how he fixed it.
1. Blow dry near earpiece till phone overheats (The message will pop on screen)
2. Cool phone down (waiting game)
3. Go in to setting and do a network reset
4. Turn wifi on
I did that at my own risk and so happy I did because it's working :) I am so thankful for that video.
Mine had the problem Oct 25 looking back through threads which came back with freezer method, I then lost it once more when there was an update and used the hairdryer method, it has been OK ever since as long as theres no update to make it reboot it stays on, I seem to get the greyed out after phone goes off for reboot
The hairdryer method works every time take ur phone and turn it off
Place the phone screen down sit it in the arm of the chair and blast with hairdryer on the top right hand corner for 2 minutes
After that give it a minute to sit and cool slightly then turn it on and ur wifi will be bak on
100% works every time and I have done it for a friend and there phone is working fine now
After trying all the resetting and wiping and the freezer trick nothing worked. The freezer almost worked. I got the switch back but my 4s couldn't find any networks.
Ten minutes ago I found this on another board and it worked the first time for me: While the phone is on, take out the sim. Do the reboot (hold down the home and the top button til the screen goes black and then the aoole appears). Let it boot all the way then insert the sim.
Wifi came on for me. It asked for my password and accepted it. Hope this helps some of you.
again - to all 'happy' people :
sorry to dissapoint you - but it wont last. You will see it will get greyed out again soon,
maybe your sequence will work a couple of times, but eventually it will go dead, and nothing will help.
This is the way it was with my 4S.
Just because your single iPhone 4S issue returned, that's not a guarantee that it will return in other iPhone 4Ss.
I recommend that anyone with a greyed-out wi-fi follow the steps in iOS: Wi-Fi settings grayed out or dim - Support - Apple and if the issue persists or returns, then get the device serviced by Apple.
