frequent kernel panic during boot up

Hi,

I am having frequent kernel panic during system bootup. It takes atleast 3-5 attempts for the machine to boot-up without a panic. It is not consistent. I have disabled dropbox and removed firefox and chrome which I suspected was causing the problem.

Any idea what could be causing the panic? Once the system boots up, it some times stays up for a long time before a panic happens again.

Did you upgrade the RAM, if so that is what I suspect the issue is. RAM is a frequent cause of KPs, they can be:

Failed RAM (yes it can fail)
Incorrect RAM (iMacs are VERY sensitive to the type of RAM installed,only recommend OWC or Crucial as suppliers)
Unseated RAM (remove and reseat the RAM)

To trouble shoot download REMBER (www.macupdate.com) or remove all the RAM except what shipped with the machine and then retest. If it works OK then you have discovered it's a RAM issue.

Thanks for the pointers and suggestions. The system was up and running with out any panics. So I decided to upgrade to Mountain Lion. I was able to download it through App Store and start the installation. Everything went through fine and finally when it had to restart, it took a long time and stopped at the grey screen showing the prohibitory sign.

After waiting for quite a long time decided to hard restart the machine. Same issue. So used the option keys at bootup and went into disk utility.

Verify disk permission threw up some errors. Then Verify Disk started throwing up errors and stopped in between and suggested to run Repair Disk.

When I ran the Repair Disk it threw up an error mid way and said:

Error: Disk Utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restor your backed-up files.

I ran Repair Disk again and it went through fine. No issues this time. Ran fix permission option as well. That also went through fine. Then restarted the system.

No use - It still shows the prohibitory sign and progress circle....just stays there....

Any advice on what next?

I had done a RAM upgrade(Transcend) long time back. I removed the additional RAM and ratained the original RAM which came with the iMac and tried. No use. It still hangs at the prohibitory sign.

Thanks. I have posted it there as well. Disk utility verification for second time went through fine. No issues. But still system hangs at prohibitory sign during startup.

The current status is - system is not booting up and hangs at the prohibitory sign. So downloading and running REMBER is not possible.

Sounds like the OS is damaged or you have a failed piece of hardware.Another commone cause of KP's is failing hard drives, it is possible that is what you were seeing and now the HD has totally failed. Next step, take it to your local Apple Store or AASP to be serviced. If it is still covered by warranty or AppleCare then there shoudl be no cost to you.
