I have apple tv 1st gen but now the kids have bought 3rd gen. How do we set things up without disturbing 1st gen?

We have apple tv 1st gen and it is nearly full. This week the kids bought a 3rd gen. Before we hook things up I want to know if it will interfere with 1st gen or if they are compatible etc. Should we unplug and put away 1st gen to protect the downloads? Can we go back and forth safely? Any suggestions before we get into trouble?

They will co-exist perfectly fine.

Note that the AppleTV 2 and 3 have no storage at all.

The newer models cannot sync with iTunes - they only stream content via their Computers icon using Home Sharing.

The new models however should allow you to access old iTunes Store purchases either via Home Sharing or directly play from the internet (iTunes 'in the cloud').
