I am trying to delete items in my trash and this error appears every time "The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -8003)."

My computer seems to only have 3 GB of memory left and I am trying to purge all programs and documents that have been duplicated. Now when I try to delete any and all items from my trash the following error appears "The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -8003)." Has anyone experienced the same issues and if so how do I resolve the issue?

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

I had the same problem yesterday with an application file that was deleted after installation of an update. I used "Put Back" to move it back to its original location, then used "Show Package Contents" to delete/empty trash for small groups of files at a time. I suppose the application file itself may have been too large to empty at one time. I hope this helps.
