transfer of data from a windows computer to a new MacBook Pro seemed to be proceeding smoothly with an original estimate of installation time of about 4 hours. Seems to have frozen up with 1 hour 22 minutes left - help!

If you are migrating using an Ethernet cable, unplug and plug it, so this transfer should continue. If this doesn't work, restart both and start the transfer again.
There are different ways to transfer files from another Mac or PC. The only way to transfer files from a PC is by using Wi-Fi or Ethernet, the worst for Migration Assistant because they fail and are the slowest ways
