A calendar invitation is not sending my response even though the invitation is entered in iCal. How do I get the accept to activate?

I found some steps you can take to accept the invitation in iCal:
If you receive the invitation in iCal, click the Notifications button (in the top-left corner of the window). Click Maybe, Decline, or Accept to reply to the invitation.
