As examples I cannot play CNN video, CBS video, money magazine video or dsc.discovery.com/tv-shows/ videos on my Macbook Pro, 10.7.5 in Safari 6.0.5.
Some video works, You-Tube for instance. What could cause this?

CNN as well as the other sites including YouTube require Flash.
Open System Preferences > Flash Player then select the Advanced tab.
Click Delete all under Browsing Data and Settings.
Back to Safari. Empty the cache by pressing Command + Option + E on your keyboard.
Quit and relaunch Safari. Try a video on CNN.
