I go through the update process recommended by Apple and it takes me back to the app store which will not let me update. They tell me to sign into the account I made the purchase with. What do I do?

What version do you have? What version are you trying to update to? Was it installed from a Disk originally? Or from the App Store?
iPhoto '11 9.2.2 (629.40) It was installed from a legally purchased disk and was registered with Apple.
Have you run software update (under the Apple Menu)?

Yes. It takes me to the app store.
I downloaded the current update, went to install and got an "Alert" The version of iPhoto installed on this Mac must be updated through the Mac App Store. Check the Mac App Store to see if an update is available.
I will attempt to go further back in the update list and work my way up to now.
Was that disk an iLife 11 disk? If it was you should be able to proceed up thru the updaters on the page that Terence Devlin linked you to.
However, if you are running 10.6.1 as your profile indicates that would prevent you from downloading the current update available thru the App Store.
iPhoto 9.2.3 was the last version compatible with Snow Lion. From Version 9.3 on requires Lion or later.
If you are running Lion or later go thru the individual updaters in sequence from Apple Downloads website.
