ical gets stuck "updating" and does not sync with iPhone?

The ical was working just fine and then it went into a "updating" situation and does not sync with phone. I fixed this once but I cannot remeber how to correct. Please help. The events I put on the Macpro do not sync with the phone and the "updating" indicator is stiil going on and on and on.......
