Messages not displaying contact pictures.

In Messages for OSX, I'm getting the default no user profile picture next to most of my contacts. When I open my iPhone contacts or Contacts on OSX, their pictures are showing up and working. They used to work and I haven't changed any settings, any ideas?

Hi,

This might seem like simple question.

Does the iMessages contact info you are using appear in their Address Card ?

The next question is "where On the Address Card"

For Instance an Apple ID may be listed on the Address Card as an AIM contact if it is an @mac.com, @me.com or @icloud.com ending ID from Apple.

If it is not listed in the email section then it will not be seen as connected to their card for iMessages.

Some people that may have used Googlemail IDs as their Apple IDs and as thier GoogleTalk Id in Messages/iChat may also be in the same position.

Also the same for Yahoo buddies that use their ID as their Apple ID.

Obviously AIM and Jabber Buddies get their pics sent from the Server and this can be the Pic the Address Book/Contacts App lists depending how old your Buddy List and Address Book list is.

Generally though the Info card in Messages (mouse over a Buddy list and do a Get Info on one) will not show the same pic as the Contacts/Address Book unless you specifically made it so.

Does the iMessages contact info you are using appear in their Address Card ? Yes, I can open contact card and their profile shows up with their picture.

I can clear the conversation and delete the user from recent chats. When I type there name in, I try and use their iMessage handle that has the little Apple chat icon.

What I'm understanding is that their handle has more pirority over my contact settings? I'm royale confused because I have some Yahoo users that have had pictures they use on Yahoo messanger, but they show up fine with the ones I have added to their contact card.

I have seem to clear up one user by deleting all the recent used pictures.

Hi,

Messages (the App) can run iMessages and also Jabber and AIM chats plus Yahoo ones.

An iMessages conversation (Apple documentation refers to them as "Conversations") takes the Pic from the Address Card fro that person.

An AIM or Jabber Chat (Apple documentation for iChat calls them "Chats") have pics sent from the relevant server.

If you are also using Buddy lists then these Pics in the INfo Card will override the Contacts List pic

Here Volker's Address Book card (Behind) does not have a Pic where as his Buddy List Info Card shows his AIM pic.

On trying to check my Buddy Lists against the Address Cards in Contacts many have the same Pic - from iChat/Messages.

I don't remember making these the Pics for the Address Cards but it probably happened some time ago.

It may have been creating an Address Card from with iChat that then pulls that Pic to the Address Card.

This does mean that you may display different Pics at different times for Buddies /contacts

For Instance picking the Little Speech Bubble linked to my iPhone number lists my Pic as the Address Card (from my duaghter's wedding).

Where as the Chat itself holds on to the AIM conversation pic from earlier.

Generally my Messages seems to have my sig pic as the Picture linked to all the accounst including the iMessages one.

However the "To" person pulls the pic from the Address Card in Contacts which for me is a different pic.

That is weird.

Let me thinks on this a sec

Humm,

This might be about whether you have permission to read the Address Book/Contacts info from Messages.

In the FInder use the Go Menu and hold down the ALT key to see the Library option.

Select this option and navigate to ~/Library/Application Support/Address Book

If you do a Get Info on these items do you have Read and Write permissions ?

Can you change a pic in the Contacts app ?

It is late where I am and it will be a while before I pick up on new posts.

Yes, I can change the pic in Contacts. I got James to showup by editing his picture again. 😮

The otherthing you mentioned that was useful was under "Buddies", was to check "always use this picture" on the address tab. The thing is, that I couldnt use "always use this picture" if it didn't show up at all.

Now I can go threw and fix everything.

Thanks.

Hi,

Thanks for the Points.

I take that you are now going through the Contacts list person by person and cycling the shown there which in turn is allowing it to show in Messages ?

Hi,

Depending on what you have set in Contacts > Preferences > Accounts

It can be "On My Mac" or "iCloud"

Enabling both duplicates the list once it is synced via iCloud.

I have mine set to "On My Mac" if that helps at all.

Hi,

That does look like it may be the sync with iCloud that is the issue then.
